It’s a wonderful life: Jim Waugh shares the secrets of living well at Grande Dunes.
What’s it like to live at Grande Dunes? Wonderful, of course, with so many different ways to lead an active, enjoyable life. Jim and Jayne Waugh have been residents here for nine years, and Jim agreed to share some of the many things that make their life so enriching at Grande Dunes.
It starts with a sense of community.
Jim remembers one of his very first days as a Grande Dunes resident, when a woman he did not know came up and introduced herself, welcoming him to the neighborhood. “That really impressed me,” says Jim, “and made Jayne and I feel appreciated. So now we make a point of doing the same thing to other residents that we haven’t met.”
Indeed, many folks here will tell you about the sense of community that exists at Grande Dunes. “Jayne and I think it feels just like family,” Jim affirms. And this sense of family extends beyond neighbors to the staff itself, as many of them have known the residents for years. Jim likes the personal touches that surprise him at Grande Dunes, whether it’s a Members Club staffer making sure he gets a fresh Danish before starting an early morning round of golf, or Executive Chef Mike Marques remembering that Jayne almost always prefers a salmon dish.
There’s no place like home. Inside or out.
Jim and Jayne live in a 4,000 square foot Mediterranean-style home in the Villa Venezia neighborhood that they simply adore. Jim is especially proud of his oversized home theater room (perfect for watching movies and sports), which is just one of the reasons they bought this particular house.
“The homes here are so solid, so well built,” Jim explains proudly. “And I just love our backyard. Jayne and I enjoy the pool and the screened-in porch with ceiling fans. We’re out there every afternoon and evening.”
Location, location, location.
This memorable mantra of real estate certainly applies to Grande Dunes, which is conveniently located in the best part of Myrtle Beach. It’s near one of the finest hospitals in the Southeast, is close to shops, restaurants and other diversions, and is only a short drive to area beaches. Inside the community, there are numerous amenities like the Ocean Club, the pool, the beach (where umbrellas and chairs await), and Jim’s favorite hangout: The Anchor Café. This neighborhood bar & grill, located at the Marina, features waterfront dining from April through October. The wait staff instinctively brings Jim and Jayne their favorite beverages without them even having to ask.
How about a quick round of golf?
Jim belongs to the Members Club, the private golf facility in Grande Dunes that happens to be delightfully close to his home. Because it’s the only truly private club in Myrtle Beach, wait times are unheard of, and Jim and the rest of his foursome can finish a round of 18 in three-and-a-half hours. “Anywhere else in Myrtle Beach, you should be prepared to take six hours to play a round—and that’s too long.” Jim uses the time saved to savor a relaxing lunch with his golf buddies at the Members Club before heading home to make some business calls around the pool.
Take it from Jim and Jayne.
Sometimes words just speak for themselves.
“We’re fortunate enough, that we could live anywhere we wanted to,” says Jim. “We choose to live here.”
