A Happier New Year Begins With a Healthier New You

January 30th, 2018

Almost everyone makes New Year’s resolutions about starting healthier habits, but very few people keep them. Fortunately for residents at Grande Dunes, you’ve got everything you need right here to keep your promise of a happier, healthier you.

Here’s why:

The Members Club is your best friend for better eating.

“It happens every year,” says Executive Chef Mike Marques of the Members Club. “People enjoy the holidays, maybe a little too much, and by the first of the year they want to eat lighter and smarter. Fortunately, that’s our approach to food all year long. We’re always finding ways to offer healthy menu options that reduce calories and salt, for example, without giving up delicious flavor.”

Salads are a favorite on the menu at this time of year, and currently the Baby Kale Salad is a winner with the members. Mike recommends trying the Cantaloupe and Pecan Salad as well.

“Of course, we are always happy to accommodate those with dietary restrictions,” Mike says. So, if you want pizza, but need a gluten-free crust, all you have to do is ask.

Everywhere you look, there’s something to do here.

Living in Grande Dunes means that a wide range of activities are available just outside your front door. Start by going for a walk or run throughout neighborhoods or along the beach. Or take part in the annual Resolution Run and Walk that happens every January. A specially-prepared, healthy lunch is provided after the race, and Chef Marques makes these recipes available to anyone who asks.

When the weather warms up a bit, the pool at the Ocean Club will look even more inviting. Beginning around Easter, water aerobics classes will be offered throughout the pool season.

Golf is a great way to stretch out, burn calories and socialize with your friends on the course. If you haven’t joined the Members Club, you should consider it. They offer an impressive variety of membership packages. From avid pro to amateur beginner, you can select the one that’s right for you (and yes, they offer lessons and clinics, too). The Members Club also hosts yoga classes three days a week, with sessions taught by local instructors.

Not into golf?  Well then, tennis anyone? The award-winning Tennis Club at Grande Dunes is a truly amazing facility, with dramatic views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Take advantage of the10 Har-Tru courts, the private fitness center, individual or group instruction, clinics, cardio tennis (so much fun, it doesn’t feel like exercise!) and more.

It’s easy to see Y you look so good.

The Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA, located right next to Grande Dunes, is the perfect place for you and your family to take fitness to the next level. For overall wellness and general conditioning, the Y offers state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment, an aerobics studio, a cycling studio, and group exercise classes. There’s also an indoor heated pool with four lap lanes and recreational area. And after your workout, relax in the sauna and congratulate yourself for all you’ve accomplished today.

Run. Walk. It’s all good (and all good fun).

The 21st Running of the Myrtle Beach Marathon takes place March 3, and just happens to be one of the flattest and fastest marathons in the country. Not quite up for the rigors of running the 26.2 miles? No worries. The three-day Marathon event also features a two-day Health and Wellness Expo, a Marathon Relay, a Half Marathon, and a 5k run. Oh, and our favorite: the Grande Dunes Family Fun Run, which takes place right here on Friday, March 2, starting on the Marina Parkway.

New Year’s resolutions are no problem if you live at Grande Dunes. For more information on any part of our incredible community, email Stacy at Stacy.Beckman@GrandeDunes.com.
